Foresthill Youth Enrichment Program started in the fall of 2001. Patty Fitzgerald started the program in the basement of her home teaching scrapbooking to elementary school children. From that start, the program developed into relocating the program to FES to provide better access for students to participate. With the support of Jim Roberts, FUSD, principal/superintendent, we were able to provide bus transportation home for the students. During the next school year we taught approximately 300 students at FES and FDMS the following classes: various types of cooking classes (cookies, soups, salads & baking), ceramic painting, care of horses/horseback riding, theatre arts, art and crafts, nutrition classes, and Spanish. We continued offering these type of classes the following years adding various type of skills including fishing, sports and games, "This and That" which included worm farming,![[IMAGE]](./images/wormfarmingweb.jpg)
dog training, various themed art classes, guitar, "Different Drums," animal husbandry and computer classes. Any class or skill a student wanted to learn we were willing to find a teacher and offer that class if they have at least 10 students participating.
During the spring of 2004 we received a grant from Placer County and offered a leadership class to our FDMS students.
We had 20 students in our class. We had four 15 year old students who were assistants to the teacher. In order to build trust in their leader we played games where the students needed to depend upon their leader. This developed the theme "In order to be a good leader you had to have the trust of the people you were leading."
We played various types of games, worked on writing assignments, had guest speakers (a former U.N. ambassador, Fire chief of a Roseville fire station, editor of a newspaper, a lawyer and self-made millionaire), plus we took a trip to SF to learn about leadership skills in the form of transportation.
We rode the train, cable car, ferry and BART. We teamed up the students with a mentor to develop their skills and asked each student to do a service for the community.
